{"id":575,"date":"2017-10-11T12:07:05","date_gmt":"2017-10-11T12:07:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rdflwomen.org\/eng\/?p=575"},"modified":"2018-12-26T12:12:43","modified_gmt":"2018-12-26T12:12:43","slug":"notbefore18campaign-is-working-to-end-child-marriage-in-lebanon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rdflwomen.org\/eng\/notbefore18campaign-is-working-to-end-child-marriage-in-lebanon\/","title":{"rendered":"#NotBefore18campaign is working to end child marriage in Lebanon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is no minimum age for marriage in Lebanon, where each religious sect has distinct\u00a0personal status laws governing marriage, divorce, and inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these laws\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2017\/04\/12\/lebanon-pass-bill-end-child-marriage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allow\u00a0<\/a>girls younger than 15 to get married.<\/p>\n<p>According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/publications\/files\/UNICEF_SOWC_2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016 UNICEF report<\/a>, six percent of women in Lebanon between 20 to 24 of age got married before turning 18.\u00a0It&#8217;s time this comes to an end.<\/p>\n<p>In hopes of raising awareness on the issue and exerting pressure on the Lebanese parliament to\u00a0fight child marriage, the\u00a0Lebanese Democratic Women\u2019s Gathering (RDFL), a secular non-governmental women&#8217;s rights organization, has launched a campaign titled &#8220;Not Before 18.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The media campaign officially kick-started on October 11, which marked the International Day of the Girl Child.<\/p>\n<p>RDFL aims\u00a0to raise awareness of the health risks of child marriage and push for a civil law that sets the minimum age of marriage to 18.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the launch, the organization held a conference\u00a0in the presence of official and civil public figures and released a video that demonstrates the gravity of the problem.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Because we consider that the marriage of a girl who does not have the intellectual, legal, psychological and health abilities that qualify her to choose freely and consciously or to commit to a contract [&#8230;] in our opinion, this is not called marriage, but forced marriage,&#8221;\u00a0the President of RDFL, Laila Mrouwe, said in the conference.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any girl under the age of 18, even by one day, is still considered a child and has the full right to legal protection from early marriage.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Additionally, the campaign has seen a number of celebrities from different fields voice their support for the initiative through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/RDFLwomen\/videos\/1462119707157429\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">short videos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"850\" height=\"479\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B4ppdfKH8x8?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the video released by the organization, an obstetrician and gynecologist sums up the dangers early marriage and pregnancy pose on girls under 18.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Her body is still growing &#8211; the uterus is still underdeveloped and the pelvis is not yet fit to sustain pregnancy,&#8221; Dr. Faysal Al-Kak says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Before 18, you are exposing her to pre-Eclampsia (<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">pregnancy poisoning), which has fatal\u00a0<\/span>repercussions<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">. It was adopted by MP Elie Kayrouz and presented to Parliament on March 2017.<\/p>\n<p>However, it remains in the drawers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com.lb\/search?q=%D8%A8%D8%B1%D9%8A+%D9%8A%D8%AD%D9%8A%D9%84+%D8%A5%D9%82%D8%AA%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%AD+%D9%82%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%88%D9%86+%D8%AD%D9%85%D8%A7%D9%8A%D8%A9+%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D8%B7%D9%81%D8%A7%D9%84&amp;source=lnms&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiv1Nmno5vXAhVHI1AKHXymCN4Q_AUICSgA&amp;biw=1366&amp;bih=637&amp;dpr=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to<\/a>\u00a0this day.<\/p>\n<p>In April, Human Rights Watch (HRW)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2017\/04\/12\/lebanon-pass-bill-end-child-marriage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released\u00a0<\/a>a statement endorsing the proposed law and urging the Lebanese parliament to &#8220;quickly pass legislation to end child marriage in the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to HRW, &#8220;The draft law would penalize anyone contributing to or complicit in the marriage of a\u00a0child\u00a0with fines equal to 10 times the minimum wage and prison sentences ranging from six months to two years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"item\">\n<div class=\"content header\">\n<h2>Child marriage continues to be a major global problem<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"item\">\n<div class=\"content assets\">\n<figure><img src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/stepcdn.com\/assets\/2017-11\/01\/8\/vsyqy\/womenslavery-jpg-700x.jpg?w=850&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"item\">\n<div class=\"content html\">\n<p>Child marriage is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stepfeed.com\/muslim-man-jailed-for-marrying-a-14-year-old-girl-in-australia-0706\" target=\"\">problem<\/a>\u00a0in countries around the world, including the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stepfeed.com\/child-marriage-is-a-major-global-issue-not-just-an-arab-problem-2725\" target=\"\">United States<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2016\/09\/these-are-the-countries-where-child-marriage-is-legal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Economic Forum<\/a>, 117 countries around the world allow child marriages, either because there is no age specification or it is allowed under certain circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Globally,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/media\/media_68114.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNICEF<\/a>\u00a0claims 39,000 child marriages occur daily. While one in three girls in the developing world are forced into marriage before the age of 18.<\/p>\n<p>In recently<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2017\/sep\/19\/latest-figures-reveal-more-than-40-million-people-are-living-in-slavery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0released global slavery statistics<\/a>\u00a0forced marriage was included for the first time showing &#8220;money and debt&#8221; to be at the heart of the exploitation.<\/p>\n<p>The figures, from the UN\u2019s International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Walk Free Foundation revealed that 15.4 million people were forced into marriage last year.<\/p>\n<p>Children account for 10 million of the overall 40.3m total, while women and girls accounted for 71% or 29 million of all modern slavery victims in 2016.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is no minimum age for marriage in Lebanon, where each religious sect has distinct\u00a0personal status laws governing marriage, divorce, and inheritance.
