RDFL Partners in Criminalizing Marital Rape

As a continuity to the Lebanese Women Democratic Gathering – RDFL’s work with Lebanese political parties in ending all forms of violence against women, RDFL coordinated with the Lebanese Forces Women Assembly to announce the proposed law on criminalizing marital rape which was registered by MPs Strida Geagea and Georges Okais on March 6th, 2019 in the Lebanese Parliament. This announcement was held in a press conference in Maarab.

The Lebanese Women Democratic Gathering – RDFL, represented by the vice president Dr. Caroline Sukkar Slaiby, participated in this conference. Also, the minister May Chidiac, a number of parliament members, ambassadors and ambassadors’ representatives, and NGO representatives attended the conference.

The conference was initiated by the Lebanese national and the Lebanese Forces party anthems. The head of the Lebanese Forces Women Assembly, Maya Zaghrini, delivered a speech in which she stressed the insistence of the party on the amendment of the Penal Code in some articles with the aim of criminalizing marital rape.

The conference also included a speech for the Lebanese Women Democratic Women Gathering – RDFL where Sukkar said, “The threat and coercion of a sexual relationship is a crime against humanity, and it is also indisputable that rape, whether it is with my husband or not, is rape”.
